Puppy Kindergarten

Puppy Kindergarten

In our puppy kindergarten classes each and everyone of our puppies are receiving curtail information that they learn to process and use to be GOOD DOGGY CITIZENS.

Puppies by nature can be little busy bodies that are rambunctious and on the move. Getting their attention can be a difficult task. So if you cant get their attention how can you ever train them?

What we start here in our kindergarten classes in FOCUS WORK. What that means is we teach your puppy to respond to us. You see an amazing example of that with Leisha our dog trainer for Priceless Pups. She is working with Tootsie one of Shorkie girls. You can see just after a couple of weeks how Tootsie comes to her and looks up at her. This is important for puppies. They need to learn how to pay attention to you so you can then move on to teaching them.

Temperament. During our Kindergarten classes Each and every is observed and tested for his or her personality type.  ( so that is 3 times a week)  We make sure that we represent every puppy properly and tell you everything there is to know about the puppy and his or her personality. This has to be done by a professional trainer. We want to make sure that each puppy is evaluated on a regular basis to ensure we are are providing you with with a well tempered puppy. Although my puppies are known as "FURRY TAIL WAGGERS!" and out song sticks in everyone's head.. do everything we can to ensure they keep on being tail waggers long after they come home to you.

Mental stimulation. Playing with puppies is not enough.

Every puppy kindergarten class has a mini agility course set up so that the puppies have to use their minds to go up and over or under or through things. They spend about 20 minutes doing this and it is amazing to see them trying to figure things out.  Each week the course we have set up changes and new things are added and new toys and obstacles are provided. Once again our puppies have to use their mind to try and figure it out. Changing your puppies toys and coming up with new games is always a good thing to continue  to do all through out your dogs life. DOGS GET BORED! Bored dogs are not happy dogs. When you go for a walk with your dog. GO DIFFERENT ROUTES! go different places. The sounds.. the smells.. the visuals are all different for him and it will stimulate his mind. Dogs that are bored to death have a higher chance of being destructive and acting out. So don't allow your dog to become a couch potato!

While we are in class we also offer different sounds. The vacuum the hair dryer pans being banged. This is get your puppy used to noises that can startle them. It may sound mean but dogs that have been predisposed to this do better in the long term. Think about the 4th of July and scary that can be for animals. But if a puppy gets used to hearing a startling bang over time the get desensitized and are able to deal with it.

One of the biggest mistakes any puppy owner can do is have to HIGH OF EXPECTATIONS!  So when you get your puppy home work on puppy imprinting first. Spend the first week BONDING!

Puppies are on the move and are INVESTIGATORS! so when your puppy comes home let them learn about the knew smells, sounds and surroundings. While you are bonding begin to say his or her name and reward with a treat every time he or she looks at you. This is called FOCUS work. Once you can get their attention the sky is the limit.

Also some dogs are not big on treats. I use chicken as a treat. But Tootise our Shorkie girl is not a big fan of treats but she loves her rope toy! So that is what I use for her reward.

Training is not that hard it is really about learning to speak a language your puppy understands.

We highly recommend getting a trainer that will come in for the first two weeks to your home and help you understand what to do and how to do it.

If you are local to us in the Puget Sound area of Seattle/Tacoma we recommend one one person
